PORTRAYALS

P O R T R AYA L S JAC DE VILLIERS

PORTRAYALS PORTRAYALS is a selection of favourite portraits I’ve taken, some stylized, some snapped. I tend not to specialize, but my passion is portrait photography where one can spend a very intimate but brief relationship with someone who is, more often than not, a total stranger. When I prepare to make a portrait, I have a rough mental image of the result and then plan accordingly. Through the choice of location and the use of lighting and sometimes props, I try to create a narrative around my subject. Although the staging can be controlled, the liaison is sometimes unpredictable, often collaborative, always challenging. The challenge to tell a story. Nandipha Mntambo, artist Praça de Touros In 2009 I accompanied Nandipha Mntambo to Maputo in Mozambique to document her performance piece, Praça de Touros. Mntambo rehearses the steps of a bullfighter in the abandoned colonial Praça de Touros in Maputo.Dressed in cowhide matador outfit, she attempts to take on the persona of the bullfighter and that of the bull. “With an empty arena, the public spectacle becomes a private act, a lonely dance, an intimate display of her fear, or her fearlessness.“
